Ingredients
  

  • 260 g all-purpose flour
  • 75 g unsweetened cocoa powder (preferably Dutch-processed)
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 3/4 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 300 g granulated white sugar
  • 113 g unsalted butter, melted and cooled to room temperature
  • 240 ml buttermilk, at room temperature
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 270 g peeled, cored, and shredded apples (about 2 large apples)
  • 125 g semisweet or bittersweet chocolate chips

Instructions
 

  • Preheat the Oven: Set your oven to 350°F (180°C). Place the oven rack in the center position.
  • Prepare the Baking Pan: Grease a 9 x 13 x 2-inch (23 x 33 x 5 cm) baking pan with butter or non-stick spray.
  • Mix Dry Ingredients:
    In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until well combined.
  • Combine Wet and Dry Mixtures:
    Pour the wet ingredients into the bowl with the dry ingredients. Stir or whisk until just combined; avoid overmixing.
  • Add Apples and Chocolate Chips:
    Fold in the shredded apples and chocolate chips until evenly distributed throughout the batter.
  • Bake the Cake:
    Pour the batter into the prepared pan, spreading it evenly.
    Bake for about 30 minutes, or until a wooden toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  • Cool the Cake:
    Remove the cake from the oven and place it on a wire rack to cool.
    While the cake can be served the same day, its flavor and texture improve when stored overnight.

Notes

For added indulgence, serve with a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Drizzle with chocolate sauce or dust with powdered sugar before serving.
